Boat Trip to Pak Ou caves

Activities: Explore the highlights of Luang Prabang such as Vat Xieng Thong, Wat Visoun, Wat Mai, visit Pak Ou Caves.

Optional: Tak Bat ceremony. The extra cost will be added.

Get up early to witness the special daily ritual activities in  Luang Prabang ( suggested time is around 5.00 AM).

In the cool air of the early morning, you will have a memorable time for seeing the procession of about three hundred young monks walking silently collecting sticky rice and other foods in their bronze bowls from the local people. These monks will walk in a long silent procession searching for offerings. The ritual is linked to a Buddhist tradition in which monks beg for their daily food as a way to demonstrate humility.

Giving alms is an important religious act in Buddhism so when local or tourists take part it must be carried out respectfully.

Your guide will be more than happy to show you the best way to interact with monks if you would like to be involved in the offering of food. We will watch as the monks disappear down the road in a long, saffron-colored ribbon. That will be a good time for you to take photos, however, please use discretion and refrain from using your flash. This optional tour is the highlight of the 5-day itinerary in Laos for those who are interested in the Laos Culture.

After breakfast,  we will visit the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Visou before taking a boat up the tea-colored waters of the Mekong River, long considered a holy spot for the Lao people. We will take a boat trip for two hours upstream to explore the sacred Pak Ou Caves - a group of caves on the right side of the Mekong River, they are home to hundreds of statues of Buddha, big and small, that have been left by devotees. You will be amazed to see how many are crammed in. Along the way, you will stop at a riverside village to see weavers working on the ancient loom. After that stop at a village of Ban Xang Hai to learn about LauLao (Lao Whisky) and LauHai (Lao Wine) and Ban Xangkhong Village, which are well known for hand weaving before moving down the Mekong to Luang Prabang.

Return to our hotel and stay overnight at your hotel.

Buddha Park

Buddha Park

Activities: Visit the major sites in Vientiane including Wat Sisaket, Wat Ho Prakeo with Emerald Buddha statue and That Luang Stupa then the Buddha Park.

This morning we will visit the highlights of Vientiane Capital. The first stop is Wat Sisaket, the oldest original temple in Vientiane and then Wat Sisaket features remarkable frescoes and over 6,000 Buddha images. We will continue to   Haw Phra Kaew, which contains some of the finest Buddhist sculptures and artifacts in the country. One of the most photographed images of Vientiane is Putousay - the victory gate also known as Anousavari.  Constructed in 1958, its architecture is inspired by the Arc of Triumph in Paris.

You will have time for lunch (paid by you) then we will discover the weird and wonderful site of Vientiane with a journey 25 kilometers outside of the city. Buddha Park is a folly of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat - a monk, shaman, and mystic of Hinduism and Buddhism who also fancied himself a sculptor despite him having no formal training. Regardless, Sulilat and his students created more than 200 cement statues that now stand in the park. While some depict Buddha in classic positions, others are a charmingly strange twist on the traditional Buddha statue.

When you stroll through with our guide you may see some sculpted oddities including skeleton-thin Buddhas, a giant pumpkin with a demon head, a gigantic 40-meter-long reclining Buddha, and a Shiva waving eight arms holding swords.

Then take your time for the fascinating sunset views over the Mekong River before returning to our hotel for overnight. Take your free time to discover the city in the last evening in Vientiane.
